How to Use Claude for Delivery Route Optimization
How Claude can help with delivery route planning, where its limits are and how MCP lets it call a real optimization engine.
Claude is excellent at conversation, summarization and explaining trade-offs. Route optimization is a different kind of task: it is a combinatorial maths problem with hard constraints. Using Claude well for delivery planning means letting each tool do what it is good at.
What Claude can do on its own
- Explain routing concepts and trade-offs
- Help you structure your spreadsheet columns
- Reason about a handful of stops
- Draft driver instructions and customer messages
Where it is not enough
With dozens of stops, several vehicles, capacity limits and time windows, a language model may produce routes that look plausible but violate constraints. Results also vary between runs, which makes them hard to trust or audit.
The better pattern: Claude plus a real engine
With the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Claude can call tools on an external server. In the AIRO design, those tools validate your import, run the optimization in a deterministic solver and return results. Claude's job is to understand what you asked, call the right tool and explain the outcome in plain language.

A sample conversation
"Validate today's file and tell me what's wrong." "Optimize it for five vans, respecting morning windows." "Compare it with yesterday's plan." "Export driver sheets as Excel."
Each line maps to a tool call. The optimization is performed by the engine, not by the model.
